The Magic of Thresholds.
“A threshold asks for nothing but the courage to stand between what was and what comes next.”
There is something about a threshold that has always felt different to me. A doorway, a gate, the edge of the woods, the place where the land gives way to the sea. These spaces feel like more than simple boundaries. They feel like places where one thing ends and another begins.
I think we spend so much of our lives trying to get somewhere that we forget there is meaning in the space between. We want to know what comes next. We want the answer, the decision, the new beginning, the finished version of ourselves. We want to cross the doorway quickly and be done with the uncertainty. But some seasons do not let us do that. Some seasons leave us standing right there in the middle, with one foot in the life we knew and the other reaching toward something we cannot quite see yet.
That place can be uncomfortable, but it can also be sacred, because every threshold eventually asks us what we are willing to leave behind before we cross. Not everything is meant to come with us. There are old roles we have outgrown, expectations that were never really ours, guilt we have carried far too long, and versions of ourselves that were created simply to survive something that has already ended. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is decide that something stops at the doorway. The fear stops here. The pattern stops here. The need to make ourselves smaller stops here.
And then we step forward. Not because we know exactly what is waiting for us, but because we know we cannot keep living in the room behind us.
People have always understood that doorways matter. Herbs have been hung above them, salt has been placed beneath them, protective symbols have been carved nearby, and homes have been swept clean before a new beginning. I think there is something very old in us that understands this without needing to be taught. What crosses the threshold matters. What we welcome matters. What we refuse matters. What we choose to carry forward matters.
Not every threshold has a wooden door. Sometimes it is a birthday, a loss, a move, a new relationship, an ending, motherhood, menopause, a new career, a dream finally brought into the world, or the moment you decide you are no longer willing to live the way you once did. Sometimes we do not even recognize the doorway until long after we have crossed it. We look back and realize there was one quiet moment when the direction of everything changed.
That is why I love ritual around beginnings and endings. It does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it is lighting a candle and sitting quietly for a few minutes. Sometimes it is opening the windows and letting fresh air move through the house. Sometimes it is washing your hands in salt water, writing down what you are ready to release, or simply standing at your own doorway and acknowledging that you are leaving one season and entering another.
If you are standing in one of those in-between places right now, I hope you do not rush yourself through it. Take a moment to look behind you. Look ahead. Decide what belongs on the other side with you and what does not. Then, when you are ready, cross.
You do not have to know exactly where the road leads. Sometimes the magic is simply knowing that you are ready to walk it.
With love from the threshold,
